High-throughput characterisation of fatty acids using GCxGC–FID for reliable nutritional labelling of food

The analysis of fatty acids in food is important for assessing nutritional content, and quantitation of both cis- and trans-fatty acids is particularly important.

However, the sample preparation to form GC-amenable fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) is often time-consuming and labour-intensive, and conventional 1D GC struggles to resolve all components, meaning certain fatty acids may be overestimated.

Here, we apply one-step microwave-assisted extraction and derivatisation prior to enhanced separation by flow-modulated GCxGC–FID for faster, greener and more reliable nutritional labelling of food.
