GCxGC for the modern laboratory: Enhancing aroma profiling and product comparison
Originally presented at Pittcon 2025
Herbs, spices, and essential oils are key ingredients in
food and fragrance products, and their volatile profiles are crucial for
assessing quality and differentiating brands.
Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with
time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC–TOF MS) provides improved separation of
such complex mixtures, by coupling two distinct separation mechanisms (e.g. by
volatility and then polarity). This can deliver much greater insight into the
sample composition, but the challenge of data-processing is one that some
analysts find daunting.
In this poster, we demonstrate the use of the new Smart
Subtract® tool, which incorporates machine learning principles to generate
‘subtracted’ chromatograms that highlight compositional differences between two
samples, making it easy for analysts to visualise and report key findings.
